Short term medical
Between jobs, waiting on a new plan to start, or retiring before Medicare kicks in? Short term medical can bridge the gap quickly. It is also the product most often oversold, so we will be straight with you about when it fits and when it does not.

Short term plans exist for specific situations, and in those situations they can be a smart, affordable bridge.
This is the part that gets glossed over elsewhere, so we will say it plainly. Short term plans are not ACA compliant. That means they can decline you or exclude coverage based on pre existing conditions, and they generally do not cover the essential health benefits that marketplace plans must include, such as maternity care, mental health services or prescription coverage. They are a bridge, not a replacement for comprehensive insurance.
Before recommending short term coverage, we check two things. First, whether losing your previous coverage triggers a special enrollment period, which would let you buy a full marketplace plan with subsidies. Second, how the short term premium compares to COBRA and to a subsidized marketplace plan. Quite often one of those is the better deal, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong product. Duration limits and availability also vary by state and change with federal rules, so we confirm what is actually offered where you live.
Often within a day or two of applying, which is why it works well for sudden gaps. Your advisor will confirm the earliest effective date available in your state.
Generally no. Short term plans are medically underwritten and typically exclude conditions you already have. If you have ongoing care or prescriptions, a marketplace plan is almost always the better route.
The sticker price is usually lower, but that is not the whole comparison. If you qualify for subsidies, a marketplace plan can cost less and cover far more. We run both numbers before you decide.
Duration limits depend on your state and on current federal rules, which have changed several times in recent years. We will tell you exactly what is available in your state when we quote it.
